Indexing in Hypertext Databases

چکیده
WHAT IS HYPERTEXT? As Franklin puts it, "defining hypertext is much like describing beauty: part of it is inherent in the eye of the beholder" (1). Nevertheless, hypertext can be defined as "non-sequential reading and writing." Hypertext systems contain frames of text, pictures, sound, and animation that are organized non-linearly in a network of linked frames. From any frame, users can access a variety of other frames containing text or other media (2). Users follow various sequences of frames and links to retrieve the information they require or add new frames and connections between them. Hypertext systems with non-textual contents are called "hypermedia" to denote the fact that hypertext can not only include text but also non-textual data such as sound, images, animation and audio-visual data in digitized forms. The terms hypertext and multimedia are used throughout this chapter to cover both hypertext and hypermedia systems.

Indexing in a Hypertext Database
Database indexing is a well studied problem. However, the advent of Hypertext databases opens new questions in indexing. Searches are often demarcated by pointers between text items. Thus the scope of the search may change dynamically, whereas traditional indexes cover a statically defined region such as a relation. We present techniques for indexing in hypertext databases and compare their per...

For the purposes of this article, the indexing of information is interpreted as the pre-processing of information in order to enable its retrieval. This definition thus spans a dimension extending from classification-based approaches (pre-co-ordinate) to keyword searching (post-co-ordinate). In the first section we clarify our use of terminology, by briefly describing a framework for modelling ...

Documents, pictures, and other such non-quantitative information pose interesting new problems in the database world. Such data has traditionally been stored in file systems, which do not provide the security, integrity, or query features of database management systems. We have developed HyperFile, a data server that provides query facilities (as well as some other database features) while main...
